Blythe (ブライス bu-ra-i-su) (se pronuncia «blaiz») es una muñeca creada en 1972 por la compañia estadounidense Kenner (esta compañia no existe actualmente).
La primera vez que ví esta muñeca creo que sería en el 2002 en una tienda de comic cerca de Gran Via en Madrid (no creo que fuera de las originales, antes no habia visto ninguna). Me quedé fascinada y no podia dejar de mirarla, de hecho de no ser por su elevado precio la hubiera comprado.
En los ultimos años la he visto en muchos sitios. Estampada en bolsos de vinilo. Estampada en camisetas….
La habreis visto en la campaña publicitaria que Sony hizo hace unos años del minidisc.
La muñeca, me fascina.
Se creó en 1972 como muñeca opuesta a la Barbie.
Las muñecas Blythe se inspiraron en los diseños de Margaret Keane, fué creada por Marvin Glass & Associates, igual que otras muñecas americanas de los 60 y 70. Su principal característica era sus ojos, que podian cerrarse y cambiar de color gracias a una cuerda con un tirador (‘pullstring’) situada el la parte posterior de la cabeza, oculta por el pelo.
Las Blythe solo se vendieron en los EE.UU. (aunque se producían en Hong Kong) durante un año, 1972, porque no fueron populares (a las niñas americanas les daba miedo su cabeza) y eso las hizo desaparecer de las tiendas rápidamente.
En 1997, la productora Gina Garan recibió una Kenner Blythe original de 1972 como regalo de un amigo y la uso como modelo en sus fotografías. LLevaba a Blythe a todas partes.
En 1999, en una expsosicion de CWC International artists en el Soho, New York,Gina se enctró con la japonesa Junko Wong, responsable de CWC, consiguió que las Blythe llamaran la atención de los ejecutivos de Parco y de los fabricantes japoneses de juguetes.
En 2002, Gina publicó su primer libro de fotografía Blythe en Chronicle Books, This is Blythe. Más tarde en el mismo año, la compañía americana Hasbro (sucesora de Kenner) cedió los derechos de Blythe a la japonesa Takara.
La primera ‘Neo Blythe’ (desarrolada por Takara) fue usada en una campaña televisiva de los almacenes Parco con instantáneo y rotundo éxito. Este hecho permitió la vuelta de Blythes a los EE.UU. y de allí al resto del mundo, pero esta vez convertidas en un producto ‘de coleccionista’ destinado a adultos.
En 2003, Blythe fue el tema del especial de VH1, I Love the 70s, donde se dijo que recordaba a una «Barbie con elefantiasis» o a «Christina Ricci», pero de todos modos causó furor entre los invitados.
En 2004, las galerías Ashton-Drake empezaron a producir sus propias réplicas de Blythe en los EE.UU., aunque sus modelos nunca han sido tan apreciados como los de Takara.

Hay toda una «cultura Blythe» despues de ponerse de moda en Japon ha pasado al resto del mundo. En la red hay foros dedicados a Blythe. Objeto de coleccionistas el valor de la original esta por las nubes. Lo mas interesante es la «customización de la muñeca» que hacen sus propietarios.

🙂 Los precios dependen del modelo, las de las fotos son «customizadas», sus dueños o dueñas las han pueso asi de bonitas. Las mas baratas rondan los 70 euros, a partir de ese precio llegan hasta los 1200 euros!!
